GREENGUARD is an American National Standard Institute (ANSI)-authorized standard developer, and its mission is to identify consumer products that can improve quality of life and public health standards within indoor environments.
Because it gives consumers in independent third-party
assurance that
our mattresses have been tested and are not producing high
volumes of
unsafe chemical offgassing.
Two organizations are involved with testing and evaluation:
Air Quality Sciences, Inc. (AQS) and GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI), a nonprofit corporation.
In 2000, AQS, a respected testing laboratory that also does testing for the Centers for Disease Control, created a rating system to evaluate consumer products relative to the products’ chemical and particle emissions. AQS created products emission standards by using guidelines from organizations such as the U.S. Environmental protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Department (OSHA), as well as many independent state and industrial organizations (including Blue Angel environmental program in Europe).
AQS test consumer products (in our case entire mattresses) by
placing
them in a sealed chamber for 96 hours and evaluating the
resulting emissions
for formaldehyde, volatile organic chemicals (including
carcinogens),
breathable particles, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide,
and carbon
dioxide, as well as any other chemicals that are present. Both
the specific
chemicals and their levels are determined. AQS has been doing
this work
for over 20 years and could be considered comparable to
Underwriters
Laboratories, Inc. (UL) in their specific area of testing
expertise.
These results are then evaluated by the nonprofit organization GEI. If a product meets its indoor air-quality standards, it is entitled to GREENGUARD Certification.
